From Brentwood Police Department: Scam Alert

Scam Alert 10.12.18

We have been experiencing concerned questions from persons who are receiving phone calls, messaging, as well as email from unknown numbers. The content is either a written, recorded, or live person who advises that you have some outstanding warrants, or actions against your name; and if they are not cleared up in a specific time frame you will be arrested by local law enforcement.

The Brentwood Police Department does not contact anyone by phone to solicit funds regarding these types of action.

Typically, the message asks for a return call to an out of area number. When you contact these phone numbers, they convince the caller to respond to a Department or Convenience store and purchase Visa Cards or Green DOT cards and then re-contact them and supply the card numbers. They then advise the fee will satisfy the judgement and clear their name from any further criminal charges.

Attempts by Law Enforcement to investigate these scams are lengthy, labor intensive, and usually unsuccessful in locating a person to charge for the crime, if the act was completed. Federal Authorities are aware of these scams and do their best to shut down this activity, however the success level is very minimal.

In this age of electronic and digital technology our personal information is often shared with third party providers through internet purchases, and by other means possibly through companies we are affiliated with. Be careful who you share your information with. If dealing with a company, ask them to honor your privacy rights and not share your information. If you’re not sure, then don’t share.

Please direct any questions to Brentwood Police Department, 314.963.8615.
