Class Descriptions

The basic skills classes, Snowplow Sam 1 through High Freestyle, are structured to be fun and educational.  Games, innovative teaching techniques, and rewards are used to encourage participation and advancement. Brentwood Ice Arena proudly adheres to the US figure Skating Basic Skills Program, and their standards.

Sit and stand up with skates on and off the ice, Sit and stand up on the ice, march in place, march forward, 8-10 steps, march, then glide on two feet, dip in place
Snowplow Sam 2

March followed by long glide, dip while moving, backward wiggles, 6 in a row, rocking horse, one forward and one backward swizzle action, two foot hop in place (Optional)
Snowplow Sam 3

3-5

Forward skating, 8-10 steps, forward one-foot glide, right & left, forward two foot swizzle, 4-6 in a row, backwards two foot swizzles, 4-6 in a row, forward snowplow stop with skid, curves.
Basic Youth1

Sit on ice and stand up, march forward across ice, forward two-foot glide, dip, forward swizzle 6-8 in a row, backwards wiggles, 6-8 in a row, snowplow stop, one foot or both, rocking horse, 2-3 in a row, two foot hop in place (Optional)
Basic 2

Forward one foot glides, right and left, backwards two foot glide, backwards swizzles, 6-8 in a row, two foot turn from forward to backward in place, moving snowplow stop, forward alternating half swizzle pumps in a straight line (slalom-like pattern)

Forward stroking showing correct use of blade, forward half swizzle pumps on a circle, 6-8 consecutive, moving forward to backward two foot turn, clockwise and counterclockwise, backward one foot glides, right and left, forward slalom, two foot spin up to two revolutions.
Basic 4

Forward outside edge on a circle, right and left, forward inside edge on a circle, right and left, forward crossovers, clockwise and counterclockwise, forward outside three-turn from a standing position, right and left. Backward half swizzle pumps on a circle, clockwise and counterclockwise. Backward stroking. Backward snowplow stop, right and left.
Basic 5

Backward outside edge on a circle, right and left. Backward inside edge on a circle, right and left. Backward crossovers, clockwise and counterclockwise. Beginning one-foot spin up to three revolutions. Hockey stop. Side toe hop, both directions.
Basic 6

Forward inside three-turn from a standing position. Moving backward to forward two-foot turn on a circle, clockwise and counterclockwise. T-stop, right and left. Bunny hop. Forward arabesque/spiral on a straight line, right and left. Forward lunge, right and left.
Basic 7

Forward inside open Mohawk from a standstill position, right to left and left to right. Backward outside edge to forward outside edge transition on a circle, right and left. Ballet jump, right or left. Backward crossovers to a backward outside edge (landing position), clockwise and counterclockwise. Forward inside pivots, right and left.
Basic 8

Moving forward outside three-turn on a circle, right and left. Moving forward inside three-turn on a circle, right and left. Combination move: Forward crossovers (2) into forward inside Mohawk, step down and cross behind, step into backward crossover (1) and step to forward inside edge, repeat three times, clockwise and counterclockwise.
Low Freestyle   (1-3)

(1)Advanced forward stroking. Basic forward outside and forward inside edges, 4-6 consecutive. Advanced back outside three-turns, clockwise and counterclockwise, right and left. Scratch spin from back crossovers, minimum three revolutions. Waltz jump from 2-3 back crossovers. Half flip. (2) Basic back outside and back inside edges, 4-6 consecutive. Forward outside and forward inside spirals, clockwise and counterclockwise, right and left. Continuous forward progressive chasse sequence, clockwise and counterclockwise, waltz threes, right and left. Beginning back spins 1-2 revolutions in position. Waltz jump, side toe hop, waltz jump sequence. Toe loop.
 

High Freestyle  (3-6)

Forward and backward crossovers in figure 8 pattern. Waltz eight. Advanced forward swing roles, 4-6 consecutive. Backward inside three-turn, clockwise and counterclockwise. Backspin with free foot in crossed leg position, minimum of three revolutions in position. Salchow. Half Lutz jump. Waltz jump-toe loop combo or salchow-toe loop jump combo. Spiral sequence: forward inside spiral, forward inside Mohawk, backward outside spiral, clockwise and counterclockwise. Forward power three turns, minimum of 2-3 consecutive sets, right and left. Continuous backward progressive chasse sequence on a circle, clockwise and counterclockwise. Sit spin, minimum three revolutions. Loop jump. Waltz jump-loop jump combination.

Hone your hockey skating skills! Hockey skating drills, turning skills, power stroking, forward crossovers, and skating with your stick will be covered. Must have passed Snowplow Sam 2or Basic Youth 1 or have the program liaison’s permission. Taught by Tim Broughton.
